The island is the site of the former Johor-Riau Kingdom. The Sultan Great Mosque and Palace complex are evidence of the former kingdom. Bukit Kursi is the site of defence agasint the Dutch and the old cannon can still be seen.

This is the largest mosque in South Sumatra built in 1748 with Javanese mosque architecture. It can accomodate 1,200 worshippers. The mosque was built on the site of the former royal mosque destroyed by the Dutch in 1659.
Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II Museum, Palembang City
The museum was the former office of the colonial resident of South Sumatra. This was site of the Kuta Lama, the palace of Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin I of the Palembang Sultanate.
The former palace was demolished by the British on 7 October 1823 follwing the abolition of the Sultanate.
Kuto Besak, Palembang City
This is the forted palace and cetnre of the Palembang Sultanate. It was constructed in 1797.
The Palembang Sultanate fell to the Dutch colonial government on 25 June 1821 and the Ternate, Maluku.
