Sumatra

Sumatra is the largest island fully owned by Indonesia and the 6th largest island in the world. Sumatra region includes Riau Islands and Bangka-Belitung Islands east of Sumatra and other islands in the South China sea. There are 10 provinces in Sumatra.

Batam Island

Batam is the second largest island in the Riau Islands. It has a Barelang Bridge that links Batam to 6 other Islands nearby. Together, they are called Barelang Islands based on the acronym of the 3 larger islands - Batam, Rempang and Gelang.

Galang Island Former Vietnamese Refugee Camp Temple

The camp was used from 1976 to 1995. The temple was built by the refugees and is still in use.

The Mazu Temple was founded in the 1820s. Vihara Bahtra Sasana is the temple name in Bahasa Indonesia.

Bintan Island Senggarang Village

The village is believed to be the first ethnic Chinese settlement in Bintan. The mainly Teochew immigrants live here since the 1700s. The village has Bintan's oldest temples.

Palau Penyengat

The island is the site of the former Johor-Riau Kingdom. The Sultan Great Mosque and Palace complex are evidence of the former kingdom. Bukit Kursi is the site of defence agasint the Dutch and the old cannon can still be seen.

Great Mosque of Palembang, Palembang City

This is the largest mosque in South Sumatra built in 1748 with Javanese mosque architecture. It can accomodate 1,200 worshippers. The mosque was built on the site of the former royal mosque destroyed by the Dutch in 1659.



Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II Museum, Palembang City

The museum was the former office of the colonial resident of South Sumatra. This was site of the Kuta Lama, the palace of Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin I of the Palembang Sultanate.



The former palace was demolished by the British on 7 October 1823 follwing the abolition of the Sultanate.

Kuto Besak, Palembang City

This is the forted palace and cetnre of the Palembang Sultanate. It was constructed in 1797.



The Palembang Sultanate fell to the Dutch colonial government on 25 June 1821 and the Ternate, Maluku.

Monument of People's Struggle, Palembang City

The monument was built in honour of the local rebellion against the Dutch colonialist.
